Maximising the lifespan of your water drainage system
This entry was posted on August 22, 2018.
All water drainage and pipe systems need to be repaired or replaced eventually. However, there are several steps you can take during the installation stage to maximise the lifespan of your drainage system’ pipework. Increasing your water pipes’ longevity will obviously help you save money on repair and replacement costs. It will also help you to avoid inconvenience by limiting the amount of maintenance the overall system requires. That’s why, in today’s blog, we’ll take a look at some of the simple, easy-to-implement steps you can take to increase your water pipes’ lifespan.
1. Choose the correct pipe material
Metal pipes are obviously tougher than plastic ones, but they’re also more prone to rusting and other forms of corrosion. We recommend using pipes made of tough plastic in the parts of your drainage system where water pressure is fairly low, as they won’t rust and won’t decay as easily. In the parts of your drainage system where water pressure is higher, you’ll need to use metal pipes, because they’re less likely to break or fracture under that pressure. By choosing the right pipe material for each part of your drainage system, you can minimise both short-term damage and long-term corrosion, thereby maximising the longevity of the system.
2. Utilise ducting
Underground ducting and other forms of ducting can protect your pipes from external damage and prevent leaks. We’ve talked about the importance of ducting in previous blogs, but it’s worth emphasising that it really can increase the life expectancy of a newly-installed water drainage system.
3. Ensure you can access your pipes easily
It’s important to install water pipes in places where they won’t be hard to access or awkward to interact with. Think carefully about the path your pipes should take and ensure that every pipe can be accessed if necessary. By maximising ease-of-access, you can give yourself the opportunity to make minor repairs quickly and easily. This will help you avoid having to make larger repairs later on and increase the overall health of your pipe system.
Here at Drain Depot, we sell a wide range of pipe and ducting options, so check out our product pages today. Just make sure you install them in a way that keeps them accessible!
