How Cooking Fats Damage our Drains
Research suggests that around 75% of drain blockages in Britain are wholly or partially caused by individuals and businesses disposing of cooking fat down the kitchen sink. When these blockages occur it is the water companies' responsibility to unblock the pipes and get things flowing again.
The added cost of this extra work is ultimately paid for by every one of us via our water bills, so it's in everyone's interest to wise up to the problems caused by cooking oil and keep the nation's drainage systems flowing freely. Continue reading

The Damage Done by a Poorly-Maintained Septic Tank
It's all too easy to take a fully-functioning, operational septic tank for granted. Until your on-site sewage treatment system runs into difficulty, you might not appreciate the extent of the problems you'll face. The History of Sewers

The Dangers of Radon Gas and How to Test Your Home
Radon is a naturally occurring gas which can be found in rocks and soil across the country. Although the underlying geology of some parts of the country gives rise to higher levels of radon than other areas (Cornwall, for example, is well-known for having high levels of the gas), radon can be found anywhere. Radon emits radioactive particles, otherwise known as radiation. Outside, radon levels are extremely low and form part of the background radiation which is found everywhere. Although there is no lower level at which radiation is completely safe, scientific evidence suggests that background radiation has minimal impact on health and wellbeing. Continue reading

Septic Tank Maintenance
A septic tank is an underground wastewater treatment facility similar to a small-scale sewage treatment system. They are usually found in rural areas where houses are far apart which makes it hard to connect them with a centralized sewer system. They are thus better for the environment since they don’t require as many sewer lines and use natural processes to treat the wastewater.
