Spotting a leak in your underground pipe system

When an underground pipe starts to leak, you need to repair or replace it. But how can you tell when a pipe that’s concealed underground is leaking? There are several clues to look out for, which we’ll innumerate in this blog entry. Some are easy to spot, whereas others are a little trickier, but it’s important to keep your eyes peeled for all of them.

1. Spongy ground

If you have a significant underground leak, the lost water may affect the ground around your home or premises. The escaped liquid can make the ground feel spongy or slightly moist, even in dry weather, so if the land around your property feels like this, it’s time to check for a leak. Note that the leak may be in one of your underground drainage pipes, as these pipes are often used to carry waste-water away from your home.

2. Increased water bill

A leak may occur in one of the pipes that feed your property water. If this happens, it will have a subtle but noticeable effect on your water bill, because you’ll be paying for the wasted water. If your water bill looks a little higher than it should, you can check to see if you have a leak very easily. Simply turn off all the faucets and other water-outlets in your property and leave them off for half an hour or an hour. Check your water meter at the beginning and end of this time: if it’s moved, it means you have a leak.

3. Lowered water pressure

If a leak is sufficiently bad, it’s likely to affect the water pressure in your property. Water may come out of taps with less force, for example. If you do notice an unexplained drop in water pressure, you may be able to tell which pipe is leaking by seeing which water-outlets are affected.

If you do have a leak, there’s no need to worry. Replacing underground pipes doesn’t have to be costly or complicated.
